Keep an eye on your business

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

The lack of employees or customers in a business or work space means there are not a lot of eyes on the property. There should be a person assigned to building and work space monitoring during this time. If there is a water leak during these down times, active monitoring will be able to catch the leak and address it immediately. The average cost for a residential water loss is between $2,000- $5,000 but in a business these costs can be much higher due to inventory loss and the added cost of downtime from the mitigation and repair process. Here are some suggestions to help keep your business safe from water damages during the shutdown:

  • Have an employee or trusted individual perform regular checks throughout the day. Checking the business 3 times a day. Morning, Noon and Night. A walk through to see if there are any unusual puddles of water or leaks , we have had some serious rain and wind recently .
  • While walking through the business look at the ceiling for any water marks or browning areas which could indicate a water leak.
  • Turn off the water to any toilets , sinks or any other water that is not being used . This will help prevent a major water loss from a toilet feed line or water line feeding the sink.
  • Have the water main and shut off valves labeled in case there is a need to shut them off and someone unfamiliar with the space needs to shut them off.
  • Make sure a list of emergency contacts for local police and fire departments is available to the person who is monitoring the property .

If there is a water loss at the business and you need to have it cleaned up and taken care of , remember SERVPRO of White Plains and New Rochelle is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
